Notre Dame de la Tremblaye chapel

The chapel of Notre Dame de la Tremblaye is located one km from the village of Daon on the road to Saint Michel de Feins. Mysterious events are the origin of its construction. According to the legend one day, some children from the village found a strangle, small statue in a tree. They brought it home but the next morning it has disappeared. To their surprise, they found it back in the exact place where they had first discovered it. Amazed by this story, the priest of Daon placed the little statue in the church of Saint Germain. But the following day the statue was once again back in its tree. Many sick people began to pray to the “Virgin in the tree”. They all left the site after their prayer, cured and restored. This is why a pilgrimage to the site became a tradition and a chapel was built there.  The chapel was soon enlarged in order to receive more pilgrims to the site. The chapel itself was spared during the French revolution, but this was not the case for the little statue ; a republican sodier broke it. A young lady, by the name of Anne Riverain, repaired it and the statue was set back in the chapel where prayers to it began once again.   Above the entrance door, there is a fragment af slate which reads : “Marie, Regina Coeli, Mater et Virgo Perpetua”. And a date : 1651, with a prayer, written rebus style : "Open your heart to her". The Latin inscription means: “Mary, queen of heaven, mother and forever Virgin”. Many of the prayer notes on the walls are testimony of the devotion to Notre Dame de la Tremblaye.  Many young mothers place their babies under Mary's protection.

In 1984, a group from Quebec made a pilgrimage to DAON.
